“Girls Supporting Girls” is a phrase that’s I’m sure you have read on countless instagram captions to date. It seems to be a bit of a buzz-phrase. Something that comes and goes online over a matter of months, until something new comes along. But the momentum of this female empowerment notion is something that I hope we can all hold onto and use as more than just a trendy caption.
These phrases come and go like memes. They are over-shared until they are forgotten about. And although a motivational quote can often get a bit of a bad rep online, I think it’s a real shame if these ones get brushed under the carpet, as they spread such a strong positive message across a landscape that can often be a sea of negativity if you fall into the wrong places, which is sadly very easy to do. However cringe it may be, I can’t help but constantly pin positive quotes on a dedicated Pinterest board, and it never fails to motivate me if I feel like I need a pick me up. Puppy videos work too.
I wanted to pen down all the buzz-phrases, for female empowerment and otherwise, that have stuck with me over recent months, some of them even years, and share why they are actually super important. Whether they get used more or are just kept in your mind, then this post will have done it’s job.
“When women support each other, incredible things happen” is another similar quote which has been floating around for a while. It’s SO true and it just feels great to support, and feel supported by other women, whether it be online or IRL. It might be something so small like an instagram comment, but that comment could make someones day, I know that has been the case for me in the past. It can often be enough to motivate someone to go on and create their next piece, whether that be styling a banging outfit and posting it online, or writing an amazing thought-provoking article for their blog. It’s amazing what showing support can do, it really is female empowerment at it’s finest. This is where great things start.
“Dimming someone else’s light won’t make yours shine Brighter”. I remember being told by a teacher in school once not to “hide my light under a bushel”, which is somewhat of an old fashioned phrase to use, but it’s true. We live in a digital age where it is easier than ever to share our talents and passions with likeminded people, so we should all be making the most of this. And hiding someone else’s light is equally as bad. “Supporting another woman’s success won’t dampen yours” and I think the reason why we sometimes hold back is due to the crippling feeling of comparison that can come with seeing another woman do so well. Maybe you feel rubbish about how far away you might be from achieving that, in which case you should quickly read my next point…
“Don’t Compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20” is one I often think of when I find myself inevitably falling into a hole of comparison now and again. It’s easy to make a direct comparison, but it’s important to remember that is a completely inaccurate way to look at a situation. Think of all the variables between yourself and whatever you might be comparing yourself to, there are too many differing factors, age, experience, background, location, finance, education, whatever it may be. Our best bet is to focus on making the most of our own factors, and simply supporting and taking inspiration from those also doing their own thing. Basically, “Comparison is the Thief of Joy”, and it’s a really important thing to remember for the sake of our mental health, especially in this online world, where, as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, it’s very easy to feel like everyone around you has it better, when the internet is just a highlight reel in the most part.
Sharing the love. A lot of people do this, and I LOVE to see it. First up it enables people to find new inspiring people to follow online. New amazing blogs to read, videos to watch or instagram feeds to follow. I try and share the love myself every now and again on instagram stories, and I’ve got a post drafted that follows a similar vibe which will be published soon. Keeping the community feel of the blogging world is really important to keep the magic of the industry alive, and sharing the love helps to do just that.
If you have anymore buzz-phrases that you often think back to, and hope that they don’t fade away, please do let me know. I’d love to add them to my list.
