It’s no secret that January is probably everyone’s least favourite month of the year, as much as it pains me to admit it as a January baby myself. I feel like a traitor to my own month, but I can’t avoid the truth, it is a bit shit, isn’t it? But it’s not all doom and gloom! January can also feel like a brand new refreshing start, and new chapter, with the entire year ahead to make the most of. I mentioned in a recent post that I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting and long term goal setting, which I always find to be the most positive way to get my mind into gear, but we all know that motivation can fade fast, with blue Monday approaching, I needed some January motivation tips to keep my positivity on track and get through the 500 days of January.
I’ve been using my manifestation journal as a goal setting diary each day, and have been making myself get up earlier than I need to each day, which is pretty damn hard when working from home on those cold, dark mornings, to sit with my morning tea and fill in my ideal day plan for the day ahead. Of course I have to face and have a tick-list against each point- so satisfying when you review and can tick, tick, tick. So far it’s really made me think about what I’m filling my day with so much more than ever before, and holds me accountable for my own laziness and procrastination basically, which has so far reduced both of those things.
Something I feel like I really need to work on off the back of the pandemic, as everything went out the window pretty quickly. Like everyone I spent the first few weeks of Lockdown 1 getting up early to go running and do yoga everyday, made smoothies and all that jazz, but then lockdown went on, and on, and on, all of my good habits, and discipline in any form, went out of the window. I can safely say I pretty much sobbed out for the rest of 2020, and the way that 2021 started was a non-starter in terms of discipline and good habits. Alas January 2022 is calling for some discipline, and really needs it if I’m ever going to achieve anything, and even though I’m still far from perfect, just that little bit of extra discipline in my mind to make sure I get my daily goals done-in the most part at least- is keeping my momentum going each day and really keeping my positivity in tact.
Rewarding positive habits
I mentioned the tick-list of daily goals, and come on, who doesn’t love ticking off their to do list? That in itself a reward, but I also like to have an actual reward written down at the start of the day and to look forward has been keeping me focused and motivated, and then makes the reward feel that much sweeter. The reward might be something seemingly small like a hot shower and hair wash at the end of the day before winding down, or a slot of designated TV time to just lie on the sofa with a blanket and think of nothing else.
Appreciating all of the little things really does give you an instant mood boost. It’s so easy in the world we live in to constantly focus on all the things we don’t have, can’t afford, wish we could do, because all we see scrolling through our phones is everyone else’s highlights. It’s hard! And it can take your mind into a dark space quite quickly. But whenever I fall into one of those instagram holes now I try to catch myself and flip it on it’s head quick time. To acknowledge all of the things we have and can do, is so powerful. I try to remember how much I once longed for the things that I now have now, and I find that truly comforting and happiness inducing. Once you acknowledge that side of things instead, it’s a case of practicing that mindset switch every time you see something online that makes you think about what you don’t have. Or, just unfollow people that consistently make you feel inferior, you’ll thank yourself in the long term and you’re really not going to miss out on anything.
